What is Grays Almanac?

Few things are more fun than watching a movie and then listening to some pop culture idiot savants talk about it on The Ringer. I built this site so I could do that more. Here’s how.

Everything has its own page

Everything related to movies or podcasts has its own page: shows, episodes, hosts, directors, actors, movies, writers, and cinematographers. Each of these pages aggregates information. Here are a few examples:

• Visit Amanda Dobbins’ page to see episodes she’s hosted and all her draft picks.
• Visit Jan de Bont’s page to see all the episodes he’s featured in (meaning the movies he’s directed or photographed), as well as all the episodes he’s been referenced in.
• Visit The 1996 Movie Draft page to see every pick, in every category, from every host.
• Visit The Godfather page for the Rewatchables episode, which includes a summary of every response to every category, including episode-specific categories like “The Top 10 Godfather Lessons for Life”. There’s also a comprehensive list of all directors, actors, writers, and cinematographers that were referenced in the episode.

Everything is searchable

You can click “Find anything” to search and filter episodes. Timestamped Spotify links are included for all search results. Here are a few examples:

• Filter by episode type and click “Movie draft” for a list of every draft on The Big Picture or click “List” to see every episode where the hosts discuss a list or ranking.
• Find every episode across The Rewatchables and The Big Picture that features Chris Ryan, Bill Simmons, and Sean Fennessey talking about a movie from the 1970s.
• Search for Baton Rouge to see a summary of every time Van Lathan speaks about his home town.
• Find every episode where Bill talks about The Keep or every episode — from either show — about a Paul Thomas Anderson movie.

See the stats

I’ve always wanted to see the scoreboard for Hanks vs. Cruise (Cruise has a huge lead) and who won the most drafts (Sean) or auctions (Sean). So I built advanced analytics for both The Rewatchables and The Big Picture. Where possible, I show the receipts.

There’s some other weird, hopefully interesting stuff on here. Have a look around and let me know how I can make this site better and more fun.
